Expansion of instant replay approved

A new system of expanded replay will be effective starting the upcoming season. MLB unanimously approved the new system with the assent of MLBPA & Umpire Union. These are the main rules approved (source USAToday):
1. Managers will be limited to no more than 2 challenges per game. They will start with one challenge and will get a second only if the first play they challenged is overturned.
2. Starting the seventh inning, the crew chief may opt to request instant replay on any reviewable call.
3. Balls & strikes are not reviewable.
4. Instant replay can be asked on the following plays:
  • Homeruns
  • Boundary calls (e.g. fielder into stands, ball into stands triggering dead ball)
  • Ground rule double
  • Fan interference
  • Force play (except the fielder’s touching of second base on a double play)
  • Tag play (including steals and pickoffs)
  • Fair/foul in outfield only
  • Trap play in outfield only
  • Batter hit by pitch
  • Timing play (whether a runner scores before a third out)
  • Touching a base (requires appeal)
  • Passing runners
  • Record keeping (Ball-strike count to a batter, outs, score, and substitutions)
