With a 10-1 win in game #7 over Nettuno, San Marino (4-3) won the Italian Series and celebrated its second championship in the Italian Baseball League, after the historical 2008 title. Giovanni Pantaleoni and Carlos Duran hit homeruns for the champions. Francesco Imperiali drove in 3 runs. Henry Bonilla was the winning pitcher with 7 IP, 7 hits and just one run allowed. Remigio Leal suffered the loss with four hits, five runs and two walks in 1 2/3 IP. Tony Granato was named the Italian Series MVP.

While in Italy everyone is talking about soccer these days, as the main championship (Serie A) starts this week-end, a major goal in italian sport has been achieved across the Ocean: Alex Liddi became the first italian born player ever to reach MLB. Liddi was called up by the Mariners on September 6 and made his MLB debut the day after at L.A. Angels (LA won 3-1), when he went 0-for-2 with a K. Liddi struck his first hit (a double) on Sept. 9 against Kansas City at home, in a game the Angels won 7-3. The 23-year-old Liddi, from San Remo, attended the first MLB European Academy in Tirrenia (Italy) back in 2005 and was signed as a non-drafted free agent on September 9, 2005 by Mariners scouts Wayne Norton and Mauro Mazzotti. During the 2011 season he played for Triple-A Tacoma (PCL) and batted .259 (OBP .332/SLG .488) with 30 homeruns, 121 runs and 104 RBI in 138 games. He led the PCL in runs scored and is only the second player in Tacoma team history to put together 100 runs and 100 RBIs in the same season. In six minor league seasons, he was selected to the Futures Game in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and was named the California League Player of the Year in 2009, when hit a sparkling .345 with 23 HRs and 104 RBIs for High Desert. The third baseman has good power but has to be more selective at the plate and make some improvements on the defensive side. COMPLIMENTS to Liddi from all the italian fans!!! We hope this great achievement helps the growth of the game in Italy and in Europe.
