2010 Rule V Draft
26-year-old Infielder Josh Rodriguez was the first overall pick of the 2010 Rule V Draft. Selected by Cleveland out of Rice University in the 2nd round of the 2006 Draft, the right-handed hitter was assigned to Akron (Eastern League/AA) for the third time in a row to begin the 2010 season. After a good start in which he hit .317 in 21 games, Rodriguez was promoted to Triple-A Columbus and hit a combined .297/.378/.484 with 30 doubles and 13 HR in 107 games. He owns the defensive tools to play shortstop and second base, so he’ll get the chance to develop into an utility player for the Pirates.
There were 19 selections in the Major League phase of the draft (last year were 17) and all but three of the players selected are pitchers. Of last year's Rule 5 selections, only four players spent the entire season in a MLB roster (active or disabled list):
