The Rays acquire Shoppach from Cleveland
The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired C Kelly Shoppach from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a player to be named. To make room for Shoppach on the 40-man roster, the Rays designated RHP Jeff Bennett for assignment (Source: MLB, Cot's Baseball Contracts).
Shoppach, 29, hit .214 last season with 12 HR, 14 doubles and 40 RBI in 89 games. In 2008 the right-handed hitter led all AL catchers with 21 home runs, and his 32 homers as a catcher over the last two seasons are tied with Joe Mauer for second most in the AL behind Mike Napoli (40). He is a career .241 hitter with 43 home runs and 141 RBI over parts of five seasons with the Indians (2006-09) and Boston Red Sox (2005). He was selected in the 2nd round of the 2001 Draft by Boston.

(Update 21/12/2009) The Indians acquired RHP Mitch Talbot from the Tampa Bay Rays as the PTBNL.
Talbot, 26, owns a minor league career record of 62-54 with a 3.79 ERA in 165 starts since being drafted by the Astros in the 2nd round of the 2002 draft (905.0IP, 911H, 265BB, 748K). He was acquired by Tampa in July 2006 in a trade that sent Aubrey Huff to Houston. Mitch was named Triple-A Durham Pitcher of the Year in both 2007 and 2008, going 13-9 with a 3.86 ERA in 28 starts in 2008 and appeared in 3 Major League games with the Rays that September. He was limited to 10 starts for Triple-A Durham this past season due to a right elbow sprain. He went 4-4 with a 4.47 ERA in 10 starts for the Bulls and ended the year healthy, making 2 starts in the International League playoffs. He entered the 2009 season as the 16th overall prospect in the Tampa Bay organization according to Baseball America. His change-up was tabbed the best in the International League and tops in the TB system after the 2008 season by BA.
