Mexico claims the Carribean title

mexico.jpgBeating Venezuela 3-2 with a 2 run-homer by Jorge Vazquez, the Yaquis of Ciudad Obregon (with a 4-2 record) claimed the 2011 Caribbean Series. It’s the first Caribbean Series title in franchise history and the first championship for Mexico since 2005. Mexico led all teams in hitting with .266 thanks to good performances by 1B Barbaro Canizares (Braves) .333 (6-18) and catcher Iker Franco .316 (6-19), while Yankees’ Jorge Vazquez (the MVP) and veteran Karim Garcia provided the power with 2 Hrs apiece. On the mound, the Yaquis counted on the effectiveness of Cuban lefty Alberto Castillo (Orioles) with a 1.86 ERA in 9.2 IP (6K, only 1 BB) & major leaguer righty Luis Ayala who pitched 5 scoreless relief innings (2 Sv). Solid in relief were also RHP Adrian Ramirez (4.2 scoreless innings with 6K and no BB) and Cubs’ farmhand Marco Carrillo (4 scoreless innings). RESULTS
